Each of the US states has its own nickname among the people. Michigan has four such nicknames: the Great Lakes State, the Automobile State, the Wolverine State, and the water-winter Wonderland State. Four of the five Great Lakes surround the state: Superior, Huron, Michigan, and Erie. In the Ojibwa language, "Mishigami" means "big water". 40% of the state's territory is covered by water.

The outlines of the shores of the Great Lakes system form two large peninsulas (Upper and Lower), on which most of the state's land is located. There are many islands of varying sizes in the Great Lakes. It is dominated by wooded hills, cut by small rivers. In Michigan, there are quite a few small lakes, and on the Upper Peninsula, the area is swampy. The weather conditions correspond to a temperate continental climate. The bowels of Michigan contain oil, iron, and natural gas. Peat is also mined here (1st place in the USA). Great plant diversity, especially among forest species.

The most numerous tribes that inhabited the territory of Michigan were the Chippewa( Ojibwa), Hurons, Potawatomies, and Ottawas. Europeans appeared in this region only in the 17th century. In the mid-18th century, the colonial policy of France faced resistance from the Indians, as a result of which the land of Michigan passed to Great Britain (1763). In the present-day borders, the state of Michigan in the status of "territory" was formed in 1805. In 1812-15, Michigan was briefly controlled by the British (during the Anglo-American War). In the 1830s, when the population of the territory increased significantly due to the mass development of the Wild West, the 26th state of the United States-Michigan was formed.

Cultural attractions are mainly concentrated in Detroit. There are a large number of museums: African American history, art, historical, Science Center, Great Lakes, Motown (automotive history of Detroit) and others. Active tourism is developed in the state. Michigan is traditionally considered a fishing and hunting region. Also, kayakers, hikers, and nature lovers tend to come here.
