Arkansas is located in the south of the United States of America. Its capital is Little Rock, the only major settlement. The southern borders of Arkansas run next to Louisiana, the eastern borders with Mississippi and Tennessee, and the northern borders with Missouri. In the west, the state's lands are bordered by Oklahoma and Texas. The local winters are mild with an abundance of snow, while summers are sultry and hot with a maximum temperature of +40 degrees Celsius. The climate is moderately humid, subtropical. The Ouashita Mountains and an elevated hilly plateau occupy northern Arkansas. The Mississippi River Lowland is on its eastern side.

In 1541, members of the Hernando de Soto expedition first explored the territory of modern Arkansas. Arkansas lands between the 16th and 19th centuries were the cause of a dispute between France and Spain. In the summer of 1836, Arkansas became the 25th state in the young state.
